I am semi getting used to it... I guess my main question is - how do I know which connections I should allow? Like, say the Apple processes - do you choose to forever allow *any* connection or just the specific port it wants to connect to? Little Snitch should be doing that work up front for its users. One person on their end spends a day or two figuring it out for an app, and saves tens of thousands of user hours having to individually perform that task. No anti-virus out there alerts a user to every filesystem read and write - they maintain databases of known threats. The same should be true for this kind of software. Improvements It displays all attributes of the live connections that the applications in your system have to the web like the time of connection and the IP address of the server connected to. unfortunately nothing comparable to little snitch that I could find. Until you log out

Fixed an issue where “Silent Mode – Allow Connections” was activated if the configuration file could not be read for whatever reason.
I wouldn't bother installing Little Snitch. But these days security is in the high seat. Can you avoid any attack from the Internet with Little Snitch? Possibly. It's the approach to the interface of Little Snitch I dislike the most. The never ending growing list of apps and services piling up in the Little Snitch Configuration. The newer Little Snitch 4 looks rather nice interface-wise. Some new things that might get me more inclined to use this app in the future. Basically I'm all over the place with opinions and have no clear agenda other than to perhaps dive in and experience Little Snitch yourself.
A hassle-free, and cheaper, alternative to its cousin Little Snitch.
The hardest part about using Little Snitch is trying to figure out whether processes that look like system or daemons are making legitimate connections.
Unlike a stateful firewall, which is designed primarily to protect a system from external attacks by restricting inbound traffic, Little Snitch is designed to protect privacy by limiting outbound traffic.[2] Little Snitch controls network traffic by registering kernel extensions through the standard application programming interface (API) provided by Apple.[3]
I absolutely use Little Snitch to block automatic updates of some apps that try to download updates over port 80---I don't trust them to have gotten the authentication right. I'd rather manage those through Homebrew & Caskroom.
Improved performance of launching Little Snitch components with large rule sets.
Protects you from trojans, worms, and other network parasites.
